5/22/16 – Before reaching for the shovel to plant those trees or shrubs, do yourself a huge favor and call 811 before you dig. Your could be saving yourself from a heap of misery should you hit a buried utility-owned pipeline. Also call when installing a mailbox, putting up a fence, building a patio or deck, excavating a new garden area.
Underground Service Alert is the organization set up to coordinate the locations of underground utility-owned pipelines crisscrossing property lines. Call the organization, or go online at DigAlert.org, at least two working days prior to excavation and submit a location request. A utility representative will come out and mark the location of its pipelines. Only hand tools can be used within 24″ of each marked utility line.
Any gas pipe damage, whether a dent, scrape, or gouge to the pipe, should be reported to SoCalGas at 1-800-427-220. If you’re curious about major natural gas pipelines in your area, visit the National Pipeline Mapping System.
